There are many different kinds of pilots, and they each have their own story of why they learned to fly. But whether you want to learn so that you can save time on travel, avoid long security lines, or to get a new perspective on your neighborhood, you can become a private pilot.
This is an expensive hobby, but we believe that our model works well for those pilots who won't be spending time every week at the airport, and as such can't justify owning a plane of their own. (The general rule of thumb is when you fly more than 150 hrs./yr it's cheaper to own your own) Many pilots have started out in the club and moved on several years later to their own planes, and some members stick around for years to have access to the plane for occasional trips.
Learning to fly is expensive, but we strongly believe that our club is the most practical method around.
The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association has created the AOPA Project Pilot program specifically to pair interested individuals with mentors to encourage them through their training. Contact The Joplin Flyers if you're interested in earning your 'ticket' as it's called and we can help you understand the benefits of being a Joplin Flyer.
